For the past 17 years John Cottrell has lived and painted in Byron Bay. His studio sits on Belongil creek right near the beach. Living in Byron Bay has imprinted itself on his work which has evolved from narrative based journey paintings to paintings based on sound and a sustained investigation of abstraction. Most of his work is produced in a series. The underlying principals that underpin the work are that of referencing nature and it’s processes, a universal ground or rhythm, a place where stillness exists.
John has a natural instinct in the use of color. John's early beginnings was as a screen printer, after which he began painting with gouache on paper and developed an interesting yet quirky small scale artworks based on journeys whereby he told stories using symbolic animals and abstract vehicles. These paintings and many more after, were created in Byron Bay and was inspired by the landscape which surrounds him to this day.
