This original stencil painting by Melbourne artist Geoff Cunningham captures the nostalgic character of Australian neighbourhoods and everyday childhood moments of the 1970s and 80's. Geoff blends hand-cut stencils and layered spray techniques to create bold light, shadow and detail. Each piece celebrates the warmth, simplicity and familiarity of retro Australian life.
'"Another Day on Swan Street' captures Richmond in a quieter era - old shopfronts, overhead wires, classic cars and the landmark Dimmey’s store, a long-standing part of Swan Street’s history, before the area evolved into the busy strip of apartments, cafes, bars and restaurants it is today.
There’s no grand event unfolding here. A woman waits by the roadside, traffic moves through the intersection, and the city simply carries on around her. That ordinariness is what makes the scene interesting now. Moments that once felt completely unremarkable can become strangely evocative with time.
Painted from an archival streetscape, the work uses a restrained palette of faded blues, warm browns and sun-bleached neutrals to recreate the atmosphere of Melbourne in the early 1970s.
