This piece is created by the mother-daughter duo, Miimi & Jiinda, who hail from the Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, and Bundjalung tribes of Australia's East Coast. The artwork tells a story of gathering and connection, with specific symbolic meanings within the design.
The central symbol represents a meeting place where people come together and connect. The outer circles symbolise neighbouring tribes, friends, and family. The lines or pathways connect these groups to the centre, representing the journey to the meeting place to share stories, culture, food, and celebrations.
The artists use their art as a medium for storytelling, drawing on a rich legacy of cultural expression and healing.
Founded by Melissa Greenwood, Miimi & Jiinda is an aboriginal lifestyle brand and mother-and-daughter artistic duo. Born on Gumbaynggirr Country, and with connections to their Bundjalung, and Dunghutti heritage, Miimi & Jiinda is both deeply personal and deeply connected to culture.
After more than a decade working in justice, youth advocacy, and education, Melissa felt called to reconnect with her roots. Her mother, Lauren Jarrett, is a Stolen Generations survivor, cultural custodian, and lifelong artist whose strength has always been a quiet force behind the scenes. In 2018, the two began painting and weaving together. What started as a moment of healing quickly became something more. A way to honour ancestry. A way to tell stories. A way to celebrate the survival and strength of First Nations women.
In the Gumbaynggirr language 'Miimi' means mother, and 'Jiinda' means sister, exemplifying the duos artistic focus on matriarchal strength, resilience and wisdom.
