Australian based artist Robert Malherbe began with a passion for painting and a long, self-imposed apprenticeship. From first hand contemplation of master works in European galleries, to looking to predecessors such as Corot, Constable and Manet, he has learnt, practiced and painted throughout life.
For Robert, painting is an aim to represent the essential truth of his subjects, realising the inherent relationship between each point of artist, subject and viewer. He works Alla Prima – a technique wherein a work is typically completed in a single session, wet paint applied in layers to build up the image, working from still life with a feeling of immediacy and naturality captured in the work.
With confident brushstrokes and a reductive approach to colour, he extols the simple perfection of a moment and offers it up for our contemplation.
