Part of the Mindful Rest Series, this series if focused on the pressure on productivity for self worth, particularly on women -I wanted to emphasise the importance of rest, and rest as protest. These figures are mindfully and unapologetically lounging within her own safe space. It's meant to be a reminder that taking time to rest and look after yourself equips you to to better show up for yourself, others and ultimately leads to a happier life.
This work is inspired by the calm and safety of friendship. These figures are lounging together, taking a moment to sit and have coffee before submitting to the needs of the day. The patterns in this work were inspired by a trip I took to Rajasthan, India in early 2025.

Em Hatton creates work for the female gaze, painting femme figures with agency, unapologetically resting, joyful, calm and in contemplation. Figures with straight backs and soft bellies.
Em’s art practice came out of a need to create a space of psychological safety, joy and comfort in her own life, and in her work she tries to create for collectors what she struggles to give herself - calm, safety, rest and a safe space for anger and power.
Colour contrasts are a central point in Em’s work, and she paints in a signature flattened style with bold bright colours and a focus on line and form over shading, to achieve this she uses a type of matte paint that achieves a level of hyper pigmentation.
Her work has been featured in Marie Claire, Time Out and Peppermint Magazine. Em creates work on Gadigal land in Mothership Studios, Marrickville, a shared artist warehouse community of makers, musicians and artists.
