Dionysus, the god of fertility and wine in Greek Mythology was also known as the "masked' god of theatre and patron of the arts. It was believed that he could liberate people through wine and ecstatic frenzy. Give them divine creativity and freedom. He is linked to both the feminine and the masculine as he enabled one to cross sexual boundaries and limits. The Romans named him Bacchus, the Liberator.
Martha Lord is a Melbourne based artist and designer who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her work is a play between abstraction and realism.
"Our mark making can represent the deepest levels of the human psyche. It is not only an expression of something that is very personal and intimate but an intellectual and emotional exploration."
Connections with mythology and architecture are becoming more prominent in her work. "My work sits somewhere between reality and the idea". Martha has been involved in over thirty group shows and eight solo shows over the last two decades. She has exhibited locally and nationally with works at the Cromwell's Art Prize Collection and private collections in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Athens, California and New York.
