What is a limited edition print?
In printmaking, a limited edition print is created from one printing plate. These prints are usually made at the same time and are numbered consecutively. For example, a piece marked 20/100 is the 20th print of 100 prints produced at the time. The prints will also be signed by the artist and in some cases titled. The understanding is that no further impressions or copies will be produced which makes these prints limited in number and therefore valuable. Limited Edition prints are a great alternative to original pieces as they offer purchasers access to quality art at more reasonable prices.
An Artist Proof (AP) is usually considered slightly more valuable than a Limited Edition print as this piece has required the close personal attention of the artist.
Artists use archival museum grade stock for prints to enhance longevity and reduce the impact of fading. Although the quality of the paper is designed to protect against fading we always recommend, hanging Limited Edition prints away from direct sunlight.
