Posted on 08 June 2023

Having exhibited both locally and internationally, Melbourne artist Martha Lord creates large scale mixed media portraits exploring characters from history and myth.

Martha's work's play between abstraction and realism, creating figures from gathered pieces of magazines and photography to build faces and forms in her work. Her luxurious portraits typically represent figures from history or Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses reinterpreted and reimagined through an abstracted modern lens. Similarly, Martha explores concepts found within our modern lives.

"Our mark making can represent the deepest levels of the human psyche. It is not only an expression of something that is very personal and intimate but an intellectual and emotional exploration." – Martha Lord

Martha's Greek heritage and stories of Greek mythology relayed by her father play a big part in her works. Likewise, Eastern philosophies and culture have also influenced Martha's work through her many years of martial arts practice.
