Born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, Lena Baumgartner is a self taught artist – navigating through creativity and finding joy through her artistic expression. As a young girl her creative journey began with knitting and sewing projects during school holidays, but it was only after taking maternity leave from a busy and stressful full-time job at an aviation company was she able to return to and explore the creativity she had been craving in her life.
Now a full time mum turned artist, Lena has pivoted her life to fully explore her artistic creativity, finding joy through colour and paint. Lena's works are modern abstract expressionist pieces full of fusions of colour and gestural brushstrokes. They show her emotion and events of the time.
When not painting, or busy with her two young boys, Lena is a yoga teacher and practitioner, with a strong interest in the importance of mindfulness, especially in how it can be cultivated through artistic practice.
"I am a 31 year old mother of 2 high energy boys. I am also a yoga teacher. After having my first son, I struggled with time management and struggled with getting to a yoga class for my own practise. I found that doing a 'crafty' activity would give my mind some much needed mindfulness and quiet time. Apart from painting and yoga, I love to cook and love food as much as I love my children. I am also a massive fit head and love fitness."
lena began her recent art practice by painting on fabrics which she then cut and sewed into plant covers. It didn't take her long to work out she preferred to paint rather than sew! In 2021, Lena gave herself permission to be 'all in' and allowed herself to be more expressive through her artwork. Through this vulnerability she feels both her art and herself have grown with more confidence. Lena's works have won Yogat's packaging redesign competition and were also featured in issue #30 of Art Edit magazine.
